Belfair was established in 1811 when William Telfair of Savannah married Betsey Bellinger.
The Bellinger and Telfair names were united to name their new plantation Belfair. Belfair
was originally a country estate and working plantation devoted to agriculture. In the
1920s Belfair's new owner, William Mosely Swain, planted the oaks that now constitute the
magnificent Avenue of Oaks. Belfair Plantation, LLC, the developer of Belfair, purchased
the property in September, 1994. Belfair, today, is a private golf club community that
consists of 730 homesites and a maximum membership of 770.
